Packers' potential coaching vacancy ranked as most attractive

NFL writer Robert Mays of The Ringer penned a piece looking at five potential head-coaching vacancies in the 2019 offseason and sees one job as far and away the most attractive: the Green Bay Packers.

Obviously, it's premature to suggest any of these coaching jobs will be open at the end of the season, except for maybe Cleveland (occupied by interim head coach Gregg Williams). But on Mays' "enticement scale," he ranks the Packers at 9.6 out of 10.

"If Mike McCarthy is fired, the next coach of the Packers will get a chance to work with one of the greatest quarterbacks ever for what will likely be the final years of his illustrious career," Mays writes. "The chance to coach a guy like Aaron Rodgers comes along once in a lifetime, and it’s likely going to have people lining up around the block to interview for this job.

"Green Bay’s offense has been in need of a schematic and play-calling overhaul for some time. If the team landed someone of (Lincoln) Riley or (John) DeFilippo’s ilk, the Packers hit the ground running in that coach’s first season. The offense has talent, with Davante Adams on the outside, a quality pass-blocking line in front of Rodgers, and the explosive Aaron Jones toting the rock. The right offensive mind could turn this group into a powerhouse."

Riley is head coach at the University of Oklahoma, and DeFelippo is the Minnesota Vikings' offensive coordinator. 

Mays ranks the jobs other best potential openings (in order of most enticing) as Cleveland, Dallas, Tampa Bay and Denver.
