Packers send safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to Washington for 2019 fourth-round draft pick

GREEN BAY -- Tuesday's trade deadline was on Ha Ha Clinton-Dix's mind over the last week, and the fourth-year safety wondered aloud after the Green Bay Packers lost to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday if he would be part of the team come Wednesday.

He will not be, as PackersNews.com confirmed that Clinton-Dix was traded to Washington for a 2019 fourth-round draft pick.

Shortly before national outlets first reported the deal, Clinton-Dix tweeted "Much Love y'all" and a cheese emoji.

A free agent after this season, Clinton-Dix spoke publicly about the likelihood he would play elsewhere next season. He also didn't tamp down rumors about being on the trade block by saying he wanted to stay, but rather accepted them and wondered if he'd be elsewhere.

The move creates a hole in the starting secondary for first-year defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. On Sunday against the Rams, Clinton-Dix was one of four Packers defenders to play every snap (78), but fellow safety Jermaine Whitehead played all but three on defense -- his biggest workload of the season. Fellow starter Kentrell Brice played 66 snaps.

Second-year safety Josh Jones has publicly stated his desire to see more playing time as well, and this move opens up that possibility. Jones has played just four defensive snaps thus far.

Undrafted rookie free agent Raven Greene rounds out the safety room on the current roster.

A first-round pick out of Alabama in 2014, Clinton-Dix went to a Pro Bowl in 2016 and had 14 career interceptions and three forced fumbles in his time in Green Bay. He has never missed a game. 

Only wide receiver Davante Adams and center Corey Linsley remain from the Packers' nine-man draft class from 2014.
