Brandon Woodruff made another strong pitch to make the Brewers' starting rotation with five shutout innings against the Padres on Friday in which he allowed just two hits while striking out seven.

On the field: Brandon Woodruff did nothing but help his case to be a member of the Brewers' starting rotation by putting together his best start of the spring in a 6-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday afternoon.

The right-hander went five innings, allowing only two hits while striking out seven. Through three Cactus League appearances (nine innings), Woodruff has yet to allow a run while dropping his walks from three to one and then none on Friday.

"He threw the ball really well today," manager Craig Counsell said. "Every pitch working, really ahead of hitters. Just a really nice outing."

Milwaukee scored three times in the first inning when Padres defenders misplayed routine fly balls off the bats of Mike Moustakas and Eric Thames, then tacked on three more runs in the sixth.

Non-roster invitee Josh Tomlin, in camp trying to win a spot in the rotation, recorded a four-inning save behind Woodruff. Coming off an impressive five-inning, one-hit shutout in his last outing, the right-hander allowed two hits, one earned run, a walk and also hit two batters against the Padres.

Through five appearances (three starts), Tomlin is 2-1 with a 4.80 earned run average.

"He's had two in a row doing a really good job," Counsell said. "We're healthy in that department (rotation), so that's going to be an issue right there for him. You don't know what's going to happen on a day-to-day basis. Josh has done his job, and I think we've got a lot of other guys who are doing their jobs, too.

"Our starters have largely performed, and we're in a good spot health-wise with them."

Weather: 72 degrees, sunny.

Cactus juice: The Angels brought few regulars to play the exhibition game Wednesday against the Brewers but much of that had to do with the team having a night game Thursday. Counsell said he doesn’t get too worked up about Cactus League lineups.

“The number of games in spring training keeps going up. So, there are days when you’re not going to have a lot of regular players," he said. "I don’t know what happened the day before or the day after, what’s going on in anybody else’s camp. It’s part of it. When a team comes to you, it might be a day when they’re giving a bunch of guys the day off.

"That’s spring training.”
